MER Savannah responds to a grounded vessel off Jekyll Island

12.1.2013

MER's Savannah, GA response team was called by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) to respond to a grounded vessel off the coast of Jekyll Island.  The fishing vessel had lost engine power and ran aground early Saturday Morning.  Once the crew was safely off the vessel, the owner contacted the Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit (MSU) to devise a pollution mitigation plan.

Under the direction of MSU Savannah, Moran Environmental sounded and emptied three fuel tanks, boomed the vessel, and placed sorbent pads onto engine oil to retrieve product. Several batteries and 150 gallons of fuel and engine oil were removed from the vessel.
