CORI team participates in the 41st Annual Arctic Marine Oil Spill Technical Seminar

This week our Coastal and Ocean Resources team participated in the 41st Annual Arctic Marine Oil Spill Technical Seminar on Environmental Contamination and Response, an international forum on preventing, assessing, containing, and cleaning up spill of hazardous materials in every type of environment. It also deals with solutions for remediating and rehabilitating contaminated sites.
This year was the 41st annual seminar and it was held in Victoria, British Columbia. Sarah Cook, R.P.Bio,the Business Manager of Coastal and Ocean Resources and her team had several papers and topics that were selected to be discussed. The kick off to this seminar started on Monday October 1st with a uSCAT (Underwater Cleanup Assessment Techniques) workshop that was facilitated by Dr. John Harper and Lee Britton, M.Sc..The workshop provided participants with practical skills, techniques and ideas to deal with submerged oils and was based on a manual that CORI developed to support the cleanup of submerged oil. The workshop was attended by over 35 professionals from a wide range of organizations. WCMRC, Transport Canada, Washington State Department of Ecology, Environment and Climate Change Canada, University of Calgary, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Canadian Coast Guard, Kinder Morgan, ECRC.
In addition to the workshop, Sarah, Dr. Harper and Lee Britton along with Sean Daley and Kalen Morrow presented on other topics. Dr. John Harper and Lee Britton, M.Sc., presented their research on Predicting the Retention Potential of Diluted Bitumen on Marine Shorelines. Sarah Cook, R.P.Bio, presented along with representatives of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, on the on the imaging and mapping of Burrard Inlet. The research was conducted in the summer of 2017 and included the study of approximately 220 km of the Burrard Inlet to acquire georeferenced, oblique, low altitude aerial imagery to be used to inventory shoreline geomorphological and biological attributes to create a searchable database which can be utilized in a variety of applications ranging from oil spill response planning to habitat mapping. Sean Daley our Senior ShoreZone Mapper, and Kalen Morrow, our Senior GIS Analyst and Program Manager presented in the Poster Sessions during the conference.
